Samsung has unveiled its much-anticipated Galaxy smartphones in New York. Available in two models – the Galaxy S8 with a 5.8 inch screen and the Galaxy S8+ with a 6.2 inch screen, Australian consumers will have the choice of three colours: midnight black, orchid grey and maple gold.

Samsung Australia vice president for mobiles, Richard Fink said:

It represents genuine innovation, from the optimal viewing experience of the infinity screen through to services such as Bixby and DeX that will transform how our customers will be able to use their smartphone.”

What’s new?

  • Display: The large screen covers just over 83% of the surface area of the device
  • Camera: The Galaxy S8 equipped with an advanced 8MP F1.7 smart autofocus front camera and 12MP F1.7 dual pixel rear camera
  • Buttons: No physical buttons on the front; the home and fingerprint reader button have now been placed on the back of the device
  • Speed and efficiency: The Galaxy S8 features the industry’s first 10nm processor
  • Security: The Galaxy S8 is built on Samsung Knox and offers fingerprint scanner, iris scanner and facial recognition for added security
  • Bixby: An intelligent interface that will help users navigate through services and apps with simple voice, touch, vision and text commands. It currently integrates with several Samsung native apps and features, with the plan to expand its capabilities to include more apps in the near future.

Availability

  • Pre-orders in Australia open on March 31 and conclude at midnight on April 27, 2017
  • Customers who pre-order will receive a complimentary new model Gear VR with Controller and a $50 Oculus content voucher
  • The retail on-sale date in Australia is April 28, 2017
