With bright future forecasted.

GfK’s global director of major appliances has forecast that strong sales of major appliances will continue after recording seven consecutive years of growth.

Speaking at the recent IFA Global Press Conference in Lisbon, GfK Global Director of Major Domestic Appliances (MDA), Natalia Andrievskaya, said that 2016 was a good year for the category with sales increasing by 1 per cent in units and 11 per cent in value.

“MDA remains a stable and healthy industry. GfK expectations for the future are also bright,” Andrievskaya said. GfK expects global sales to improve by between 2-4 per cent in units over the 2017 and 2018 calendar years. “There are some big global growth drivers like built-in appliances for example. By comparison the freestanding market is so mature that it is barely growing any more on a global scale.”

The key product categories showing year on year value growth according to GfK over the last 12 months are:

Cooking hobs with integrated extraction hoods: 102% increase in value

Refrigeration with frost free and A++ efficiency: 34%

Extractor hoods: 22%

Washing machines over 8kg: 15%

Tumble dryers with heat pumps: 11%

“The biggest impact on the MDA market is still coming from high capacity washing machines and no frost refrigerators. Induction hobs continue to push cooking together with pyrolitic ovens as well as the new player – cooktops with integrated hoods with showed triple digit growth last year,” she said.
