When you look back at statements made in the last millennium, sometimes you can look like a visionary and other times you, well, can look a little bit daft.
UnderCurrent was recently trawling the interwebs and came across this transcript for a 7:30 Report story on digital TV transmissions from December 1999.
The reporter, Alan Kohler, does a good job covering the various digital formats, while the Howard Government comes across as beacon of forward thinking – not something currently associated with conservative governments. David Mercer, however, who is described as a “UK Television Analyst”, does not cover himself in retrospective glory:
I think certainly when you talk about high definition TV…then certainly you are talking about a relatively small part of the audience, people who want so-called home cinema TV.
These are big 40-inc,h 50-inch television sets. That’s a small, niche market, but it’s not really for the vast majority of consumers.
