Sony Australia plans on launching the new Xperia P smartphone in mid-June, though no carrier information is currently available. Designed to sit slightly below the Xperia S in the market, the Mobile team at Sony Australia is currently in talks with the major telcos.

Interestingly, our source told us that Telstra is hesitant to carry another Android 3G phone, as it specifically wants to push as many 4G products onto the market before Vodafone and Optus release any.

The Xperia P has a 4-inch scratch-resistant TFT touchscreen (960 x 540) and weighs 120 grams. At launch, it will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), with an upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) available shortly afterwards. This phone, which will be available in silver, black and red, has an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and 8x zoom and an LED flash.
