Samsung Electronics has unveiled its Galaxy S20 series flagship devices – the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra – at its annual Unpacked Event in San Francisco. All three Galaxy S20 variants come with 5G connectivity and the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra are the first devices to take advantage of sub-6 and mmWave.
The key new feature on the Galaxy S20 devices is updated camera architecture that combines Artificial Intelligence (AI) with Samsung’s largest image sensor yet. The S20 and S20+ devices have a 64MP camera, while the S20 Ultra sports a 108MP camera for increased resolution and more detailed images.
The camera on the Galaxy S20 and S20+ also boast Space Zoom technology that combines Hybrid Optic Zoom and Super Resolution Zoom with up to 30 times zoom. The Galaxy S20 Ultra uses AI powered multi-image processing to reduce quality loss at high zoom levels with up to 100 times zoom.
Further, the Galaxy S20 can shoot video in 8K which can then be streamed to a Samsung QLED 8K TV or an 8K video still can be turned into a high-res photo. Samsung has also partnered with YouTube to allow Galaxy S20 users to upload 8K videos directly to YouTube.
The devices are now available for pre-order in Australia until March 5, 2020 before an on-sale date of March 6, 2020. Customers who preorder a Galaxy S20 device are eligible to redeem a bonus pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds+ valued at RRP $299.
The Galaxy S20 retails at $1,349 or $1,499 for the 5G variant, the Galaxy S20+ retails for $1,499, $1,649 for the 5G variant with 128GB storage and $1,899 for the 5G variant with 512GB storage. All Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ devices are available in Cosmic Grey, Cosmic Black and Cloud Blue.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra is only available as a 5G variant and retails for $1,999 with 128GB storage or $2,249 for 512GB storage. It comes in Cosmic Grey or Cosmic Black.
The new Galaxy Buds+ now offer 22 hours of battery life (11 hours from the buds and an extra 11 hours in the case), two-way speakers for improved sound quality through Samsung’s latest voice detection technology and added volume control for on-the-go use.
Next step in foldable smartphone offering
Alongside the new Galaxy S20 series devices, Samsung Electronics debuted its Galaxy Z Flip foldable smartphone with a clamshell design, at its Unpacked Event. Pricing and availability for Australia is yet to be announced but Samsung Electronics Australia has confirmed that it will launch “in the coming months”.
The Galaxy Z Flip features a 6.7-inch Infinity Flex Display with Samsung’s proprietary bendable Ultra-Thin Glass and freestop folding hinge that allows it to stay open at a range of angles like a laptop screen.
When closed, users can check the date, time and battery status on the cover display and receive real time notifications to answer calls without unfolding the device. With Multi-Active Window, users can seamlessly multi-task activities such as reading a news article on the top half, while online shopping on the bottom half.
Samsung Electronics Australia VP – mobile, Garry McGregor said the Galaxy Z Flip is Samsung’s next step in foldable smartphones.
“It harks back to the classic clamshell design we know and love, bolstered by the power of today’s technology. The Galaxy Z Flip is created for those who appreciate design. It has an elegant aesthetic and is designed to be a statement piece. Samsung has harnessed the potential of the foldable category and created a device that is designed to change the way we interact with our smartphones,” he said.
