A family’s ‘tape and plastic bag’ repaired washing machine catches fire.

Although a NSW Fire & Rescue spokesperson has stated that a fire that destroyed the back of a home at the Newcastle suburb of New Lambton in August, was caused by a Samsung washing machine, Samsung is disputing the claim.

News.com has reported that Lisa and Joel Hudson only learnt of the danger from the Samsung machines in July this year after receiving a letter from a retailer. Lisa said she immediately contacted Samsung which sent a technician to fix the machine.

The Hudson’s machine was one of 67,000 washers which have had the official plastic-bag and tape “rework” nationally. The repairs have failed in 22 or more cases, at least two of which led to fires.

A Samsung spokesperson has told news.com that it was “ deeply concerned” but that its “engineers conducted an analysis of the washing machine on site at the residence and concluded that the Samsung top loader washing machine was not the cause of the fire”.

Samsung declined to talk to applianceretailer.com.au about the matter.

Understandably, Lisa Hudson said all recalled washers should be replaced, not repaired.
