After bringing together the greats of the NRL last month to spruik its sponsorship of the upcoming Auckland Nines Tournament, Dick Smith has launched a competition to send one rugby league fan over to the two day tournament as the retailer’s official reporter on the ground.

The Dick Smith NRL Auckland Nines competition brings together all 16 NRL clubs for two days to play a series of knockout nine-a-side matches, with the winning team set to win $2.35 million. Partnering with Toshiba and Air New Zealand, Dick Smith is offering a major prize to one winner (plus eight friends) to attend the match for a VIP experience worth $60,000.
Here’s the pitch from Dick Smith:
As our reporter on the ground you’ll cover the entire tournament. You’ll follow every bone-crunching tackle, game-changing play and inspired, last second try. You’ll be there for all the excitement. And because we don’t want you missing a second of it, you’ll have a whole support team on hand to show you the ropes!
In an inspired move that is sure to get Dick Smith plenty of exposure for the sponsorship, competition entrants are required to ‘like’ Dick Smith’s Facebook page, answer a series of questions and upload a photo demonstrating their “passion for NRL” before trying to get as many social media shares and votes as possible.
The prize includes return flights and accommodation in Auckland for nine people, box seats to all the Auckland Nines games, and attendance at a training session, the Coach and Captain Breakfast and “dinner with a NRL legend [sic]”. The winners will also get a “behind the scenes” tour of Eden Park and a photo with one of the teams, as well as a number of other experiential prizes such as an America’s Cup Sailing Experience and Harley Davidson tour of Auckland.
The nine entrants with the most Facebook votes will also win a Toshiba tablet, valued at RRP $399.
Entry is open to over-18s only, and full terms and conditions can be found on Dick Smith’s website.
Aspiring reporters should get in quick — the competition and voting closes this week.
