UnderCurrent has been digging deep into the archives recently to entertain (hopefully) beloved readers with some appliance advertisements from middle of last century. So far we’ve seen some cheeky print ads from Kenwood and Hoover and today UnderCurrent brings you the pièce de résistance — the advertisement that political correctness forgot — a print spot from the 1950s for vintage American appliance brand Dormeyer:

And just in case that one is tad too tattered, UnderCurrent found this cleaner version:

Dormeyer-1

According to the few sources available that remember Dormeyer, the brand was established in the early 1900s in Chicago, in the United States, and competed manfully with leading brands Sunbeam and Mixmaster in various benchtop appliance categories. The company, however, failed to match the affordability of its rivals, as economies of scale made rivals brands cheaper, and Dormeyer eventually went out of business towards the end of the 1960s.

UnderCurrent also found this Dormeyer ad, which it believes is from 1954 (based on it promoting sales for Mother’s Day on 9 May). Once again, you wouldn’t say this brand was at the forefront of gender equality:

Finally, this next ad is probably UnderCurrent’s favourite, not just because it is in colour, but because it the blender is ready to mulch the owner/user figurine. So enlightened!
