Reaches third position in local handset market.
According to the latest industry data, Alcatel grew by almost 70% during Q4 delivering around 10% of the local market share.
The figures, published by independent analyst firm IDC, reveal that ALCATEL is third in smartphone sales by volume and second in feature phone sales by volume, delivering an overall third position by volume for total handsets sold in Australia across Q4 of 2015 (Oct – Dec inclusive). Similar rankings were achieved in Q3 of 2015 (July-Sept inclusive).
Alcatel Pacific and Singapore, vice president and managing director Sam Skontos (pictured) said the results come off the back of strong new product introductions during the fourth quarter of 2015. This included the launch of the Telstra Essentials Tablet, the Quattro 4G through Boost and the IDOL 3, which delivers high-end features and styling, a 5.5-inch display and an outright price of $379.
“2015 was a game-changing year for Alcatel both locally and abroad. The market’s Q4 results reflect that we are clearly but aggressively growing whilst always ensuring that we deliver technology that makes sense to mass market consumers, from design through to affordability,” Skontos said.
“Our ongoing commitment to, and focus on the pre-paid segment of the market remains as strong as ever, and we head into 2016 with an impressive portfolio of products and complementary brand activity across music, lifestyle and sport. Such activity will continue to bring the brand to life and give Australian consumers meaningful opportunities to engage with our brand”, he added.
This year the company rebranded globally to simply Alcatel, and a range of new products showcased at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) received 15 different show and industry accolades.
Globally, Alcatel has achieved a top 5 position in the handset market, and has ambitions to become number four in the US and number 2 in Latin America in the short term.
“Thanks to the successful launch of the IDOL 3 last year, Alcatel has built the foundation for a solid market position to continue to gain momentum with the new flagship IDOL 4 and IDOL 4S in 2016,” Skontas added.
