The Whitford family has announced the passing of John Arthur Whitford on Wednesday 14 August, 2024 at 87 years of age.

“It is with great sadness we wish to advise the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, John Arthur Whitford,” the Whitford family said in a statement shared with Appliance Retailer.

“John was a dedicated husband to Jan, devoted father, and grandfather to his family. He established John Whitford Discounts of Five Dock back when TV was black and white and washing machines had a ringer on the side of them.

“Together the Whitford family built an appliance business which evolved over the years from a Retravision store for over 30 years to joining Narta as a specialist kitchen appliance business. After the Sydney metro compulsory acquired the Five Dock site, the family business was taken over by Ben Whitford, John’s grandson.

“He will be missed every day.

“Following a private family service, we invite all of John’s industry family and friends to celebrate his life at Pennant Hills Golf club on Friday 23 August 2pm to 6pm.”

Narta chair, Kay Spencer paid tribute to Whitford describing him “as an icon who was respected by everyone”.

In a statement to Appliance Retailer, she said: “His non-confrontational manner and interest in people was his unique attribute. He was always a passionate advocate for independent retailing and certainly championed these businesses throughout his time in the industry.

“It is the passing of an era and he will be sadly missed.”
