SYDNEY: Sony Australia, leading supplier of memory stick media in Australia, has announced it will be reducing the price of its range of Memory Stick products.
The price reductions will come into effect immediately, with the memory stick, memory stick Pro and memory stick PRO duo range all included.
Sony Australia product manager, Matthew Luu suggests flash memory is becoming increasingly affordable as technology improves.
“Flash media pricing is one of the most increasingly affordable media on the market today and Memory Stick is no exception. Significant price decreases are driven largely by price of components, efficiencies of scale for production as well as market trends. Sony passes such savings onto the retailers and consumers as soon as practicable and the recent price drop is no exception,” said Luu.
“It goes without saying though that pricing of media is not the only driver of product demand, the launch of compelling compatible hardware products is also a significant factor.”
With the looming merger between Lexar and Micron, Sony’s timing of the price reduction could not be better. When questioned as to its timing in relation to the Lexar/Micron merger, Luu stated that market share is always important for the company.
“Sony always seeks to maximise its market share in any category in which it operates,” he said.
The price reductions will come in affect immediately, and range from 30 to 40 per cent off smaller capacity models up to 60 to 70 per cent of larger capacity memory sticks.
